JR Baker (Law) is able to give affordable advice and support to those people who encounter legal problems in their lives but who find it difficult to deal with them usually because of cost or because of uncertainty about how they might solve their problems.
We believe in the principle that every one is equal before the law but we know that not everyone has equal access to legal services. We do our best to help everyone and anyone access legal solutions to their problems.
Some community services such as Legal Aid offer support but sometimes either the legal matter is not something Legal Aid deals with. Sometimes the client's income is just over the limit set in place as a test of a person's eligibility for assistance. JR Baker (Law) is able to help people in those situations.
Jan Baker is the principal of JR Baker (LAW). She has extensive work experience. She has been a teacher, school principal, university lecturer, researcher, ministerial adviser, administrator, public servant and lawyer.
Jan studied in the US and UK. She completed her PhD at the University of Tasmania. She was inaugural chair of the Tasmanian Women’s Consultative Council, a member of the University Council and a member of the Royal Hobart Hospital/University Ethics Committee. She tutored and lectured in the Faculty of Education at the University of Canberra moving from there to the Department of Education and Training and then on to the Australian Government’s Attorney General’s Department and the Australian Institute of Criminology.
She graduated in law from the University of Canberra and completed her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice through the College of Law in Sydney. She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the ACT Supreme Court and is entered in the roll of lawyers in the High Court of Australia.
Jan worked briefly as a volunteer on the help desk at the ACT Legal Aid Commission, with ACT Victim Support and with Communities at Work. She then worked as a solicitor in two boutique generalist law firms in Canberra gaining considerable and diverse experience in most areas of civil and criminal law before setting up JR Baker (LAW).
She regularly assists at the ACT Law Society’s Legal Advice Bureau and is a member of the ACT Law Society’s Inclusion and Diversity Committee and the Women Lawyers Association ACT. She is also a member of the New South Wales Law Society.
