Jan has been a teacher, school principal, university lecturer, researcher, ministerial adviser, administrator and public servant.
Jan studied in the US and UK. She completed her PhD at the University of Tasmania. She was inaugural chair of the Tasmanian Women’s Consultative Council, a member of the University Council and a member of the Royal Hobart Hospital/University Ethics Committee. She tutored and lectured in the Faculty of Education at the University of Canberra moving from there to the Department of Education and Training and then on to the Australian Government’s Attorney General’s Department and the Australian Institute of Criminology.
She graduated in law from the University of Canberra and completed her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice through the College of Law in Sydney. She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the ACT Supreme Court and is entered in the roll of lawyers in the High Court of Australia.
Jan worked briefly as a volunteer on the help desk at the ACT Legal Aid Commission, with ACT Victim Support and with Communities at Work. She then worked as a solicitor in two boutique generalist law firms in Canberra gaining considerable and diverse experience in most areas of civil and criminal law before setting up JR Baker (LAW).
She regularly assists at the ACT Law Society’s Legal Advice Bureau and is a member of the ACT Law Society’s Inclusion and Diversity Committee. She is also a member of the New South Wales Law Society.
